Luckily for me, my great love from my aforementioned farming date is still alive. He told me that, when he worked on a farm, he once had to use a shotgun to shoot a mountain lion to save his goats. I have entered foreign territory. In terms of looks, he’s exactly my type – tall, muscular, chubby, with perfectly crooked teeth. But there is something different about him. One of the first times he fell back asleep, I was woken up by the sound of the drill. I stepped outside and found him fixing my bathroom door, which had come loose from its hinges, with a drill he happened to have in his truck. I stared at him, fascinated. “How do you know how to do that?” He looks confused. “I am almost 40 years old,” he said. “I know how to use a drill.”
However, I was somewhat familiar with their kind, raised by traditionally masculine men. My grandfather was a soldier and plumber who farmed, hunted for food, and insisted on teaching me how to skin a deer at the age of 12. My dad drove a pickup truck, watched sports on TV, knows about baked goods and is strangely excited about trips to the dump. This is what most men in upstate New York, where I grew up, are like. At the age of 18, I moved to London, then Brooklyn, where this type of man may be extinct. I started dating vegans who carried small notebooks and drank gin gimlets. It feels so amazing and strange—how soft their hands are! These men feel more advanced, more intellectual and like… rich. They were on installing an air conditioner. You can pay someone for that! They are busy checking email. At that time, I was the female version of this unfortunate urban man. I see myself as a modern Carrie Bradshaw who knows nothing about cooking, using the kitchen for storage. I vehemently refused permission. I consider these – in myself and in my partners – as badges of honor for the city. Looking back, I think it was just called incompetent.
To be clear, up until this point, I’ve never dated a guy who can lift his own backpack without difficulty, let alone fix a tire. There was something about my newly single person that subconsciously summoned these traditionally masculine guys. And I love it. It reminds me of something my mother told me about 10 years ago. I interviewed her about what to look for in a man, and she told me, “He has to be handsome, reliable, and able to fix things around the house. A broken sink, a raccoon in the basement – that’s their problem.” I was like, oh, thanks for that old fashioned advice! Also, I live in New York and will never have a basement. But now I’m like… maybe she’s not an idiot? In recent years, certain types of masculinity have gained a bad reputation. That is, you know, “toxic.” I’m not a big fan of patriarchy, but personally I’ve always seen greater value in so-called masculine men. Without them, who would climb those giant poles to fix our power cables? But I never felt those guys for me, romantically speaking.
