When it came to choosing a photo location for PatBO’s spring 2023 campaign, designer Patricia Bonaldi turned to a city with a longstanding personal influence: Rio de Janeiro. Raised in the municipality of Uberlândia, in northwestern Brazil, the legend of Rio’s “girls from Ipanema” inspired her to create a fashion brand to dress them. She succeeded: Today, PatBO is best known for its sexy cut-out beach dresses, worn by women from the Seychelles coast to Saint-Tropez. (Recently, Bonaldi’s look has caused even more domestic uproar: Camila Cabello just donned a dress from her spring 2023 collection to the Grammys, complete with an encrusted bra. pearls handmade by Brazilian artisans.) “Rio is a vibrant and beautiful city—it has both old world charm and super relaxing beach vibes,” Bonaldi tells Vogue magazine. So two weeks ago, she packed up her bags and went to the cidade maravilhosa to try on models on the terrace of Copacabana Palace.

Meanwhile, Fasano al Mare, the hotel’s restaurant, is known for being one of the best in Rio, if not the best. Bonaldi emphasizes that, when in Brazil, you really can’t go wrong with food: “The food in Brazil in general is amazing! In particular, Rio has fresh seafood, great fruits and vegetables, delicious stews, and of course, pão de queijo. If you’ve never tried, the first time will change your life,” she said.
